VMA Design Studio Completes Extension and Interior Renovation for Street Artist Benzilla
VMA Design Studio has recently finalized the extension and interior design project for the renowned street artist Benzilla. Situated in the dynamic urban landscape of Bangkok, the project involved the renovation of a two-story house, incorporating a distinctive extension to create a bespoke studio space for the artist’s paintings and sculptures.
Upon arrival, visitors are immediately struck by the imposing structure of the studio extension. This architectural addition draws inspiration from Benzilla’s iconic “L000k character,” characterized by its three-eyed motif. The extension’s shape mirrors the character’s curves, creating a unique and recognizable silhouette. Erected over the former lawn area, this new structure serves as the primary workspace for the artist and his team. It features a separate entrance specifically designed for guest visits and open-house gallery viewings, ensuring seamless interaction between the public and the artist’s creative environment.
The exterior of the studio extension is crafted from curved concrete walls, boasting an extraordinary height that fosters a sense of spaciousness within. The concrete surface is meticulously textured with vertical strips, a design choice that enhances the building’s interaction with natural light, accentuating its curves and adding a dynamic visual element.
Inside, the studio is thoughtfully divided into distinct functional areas. A smaller office space is enclosed with stainless steel bi-folding doors, providing a private area for administrative tasks and meetings. The main studio area is dedicated to gallery and painting activities, featuring a harmonious blend of form and function. Behind the triple-curved walls, a custom combination of storage and seating offers both practicality and comfort. Essential facilities such as a paint washing room and an indoor spray paint cabinet with proper ventilation ensure the studio meets the artist’s specific needs. The floor is coated with industrial-grade white polyurethane, chosen for its durability and ease of maintenance.
The main residence’s interior renovation embraces two distinct atmospheres. The ground level maintains a cool, gallery-like vibe, subtly warmed by select tones to ensure comfort. Polished concrete textures and stainless metallic accents dominate this space, creating a sleek and modern aesthetic. In contrast, the upper level is dedicated to the artist’s private quarters, where the design maximizes space and natural light to foster a serene environment. This area also includes a common relaxation space adorned with collectible figures that inspire the artist. The design here is intentionally warmer and more inviting, providing a restful retreat after long hours in the studio.
Achieving a delicate balance between innovative design and practical use, this project creates an environment that nurtures Benzilla’s creativity while providing a comfortable living space. The result is a dynamic and inspiring home that seamlessly integrates work and life.
