Tide Bangsaray blends into Bangsaray Beach’s landscape
Bangkok-based architecture firm, VMA Design Studio, has completed the Tide Bangsaray restaurant & bar in Pattaya, Thailand.
Located on the serene seashore of Bangsaray Beach, an upcoming coastal destination for those seeking a quieter alternative to the bustling beaches of Pattaya city, The Tide Project is a modern restaurant and bar that integrates architecture with the natural surroundings. Its cuisine showcases Thai-inspired dishes made with fresh, locally sourced sea ingredients, fusing global culinary techniques with regional flavors.
The project draws inspiration from the shoreline and tidal changes of Bangsaray Beach, revealing smooth, organic forms as the sea level fluctuates. Envisioned as part of this dynamic landscape, the restaurant appears like sea pebbles, gradually unveiling their intricate internal compositions as one approaches and enters the space. This concept reflects the sectional revelation of pebbles, where cutting through these natural forms exposes captivating internal patterns. These patterns influence the creative vision, informing the spatial dynamics and visual narrative of the project.
The structure seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, emphasizing the fluid relationship between the built environment and the coastal landscape. The restaurant features an open-air lounge shaded by elliptical canopies, an interior dining space designed to be light and airy, with a calm, natural light that ensures comfort, and a rooftop lounge offering panoramic views of the coastline. The use of pebble-shaped structures not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also provides functional elements such as planters and shading canopies that enhance the lush, green ambiance of the restaurant.
The interior design is characterized by its minimalist yet inviting aesthetic. The main dining area features a geometric ceiling pattern that creates a cavernous feel, mimicking the experience of being inside a pebble and revealing its unique layers. Large glass walls provide unobstructed views of the sea, allowing diners to feel connected to the coastal landscape. At the heart of the building is a central fern tree garden, linking the dining spaces at the front with the rear areas housing the main kitchen, staff services, and a washroom courtyard. This garden space also accommodates the staircase leading to the upper-level lounge, enhancing the natural flow and cohesion of the restaurant’s layout.
The integration of green spaces within the restaurant promotes a sense of well-being and tranquility for guests. The washroom courtyard features wooden lavatory pods and a spacious, pebble-shaped handwashing station, creating a luxurious and comfortable ambiance. These semi-outdoor facilities allow for a continuous connection to the natural surroundings, reinforcing the restaurant’s commitment to an immersive, nature-centric experience. Tide Bangsaray’s thoughtful approach establishes a dining environment that is both innovative and deeply rooted in its environmental context, offering visitors a unique blend of comfort and nature that celebrates and preserves the coastal landscape.
